Firstly – a bit about the manuka species… while there is only one species in New Zealand, there are over 80 confirmed as native to Australia – 28 been scientifically proven “bioactive”. It is thought that New Zealand’s only species originally travelled there from southern Australia, after the separation of the ancient continent Gondwana.
What sets Leptospermum species (manuka) honey apart from traditional honey?
Manuka honey's antibacterial properties are what set it apart from traditional honey. Additionally, manuka honey has antiviral, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits. In fact, it has traditionally been used for wound healing, soothing sore throats, mouth ulcers and improving digestive issues.
These key factors are found only in Manuka Honey
Leptosperin – Naturally occurring chemical found only in manuka nectar (& a few very close relatives)
DHA – Dihydroxyacetone –is another naturally occurring chemical in the nectar of the manuka flower. DHA then converts to the powerhouse MGO once our busy bees turn the nectar into honey.
MGO –methylgloxal –is nature’s agent responsible for manuka honey’s unique antibacterial properties and is the key indicator of activity strength in Manuka honey.
The higher the MGO number, the more potent the antibacterial properties.
Our manuka honeys are tested at independent laboratories to contain the key beneficial compounds essential to bioactive manuka honey: Methygloxal (MGO), Dihydroxyacetone (DHA).
Extensive studies in both New Zealand & Australia, Australia’s Manuka Honey has been proven to contain the essential MGO property, able to inhibit growth of many bacteria & fungi.
The number rating on both UMF and MGO rated honey indicated the concentration of methylglyoxal content in that batch of honey.
The higher the number, the higher the concentration of methylglyoxal. Honey with higher numbers has the same qualities as that with lower numbers but is more potent.
If a jar has the letters MGO, it has been tested for the methylglyoxal content. The numbers after MG or MGO show the Methylglyoxal Level in mg/kg.
Note: Non-UMF Manuka honey is not inferior honey. It is most often Manuka honey produced by quality beekeepers that do not wish to pay the high costs of joining the UMFHA. This does not mean it is a poor-quality honey but should always have a MG rating to ensure activity.
We use only cold extraction methods and minimal processing to help preserve the many beneficial health-giving properties of premium quality honey.
